What is HRT/hormone replacement therapy/estrogen/testosterone?
HRT is a complex topic - certainly not one we can cover in a few sentences. However, here are the basics: HRT is when a person with a certain levels of one hormone starts taking a different hormone to achieve certain desirable changes. In general, a person who is assigned male at birth will likely take estrogen, while a person who is assigned female at birth will likely take testosterone. Keep in mind that the dosage, genetics, and even intersex conditions can all influence what changes happen, when, and how much.
What is "top surgery"?
Top surgery usually refers to the removal of all or some breast tissue for transmasculine people or transgender men; however, it can also refer to the addition of breast tissue, also called breast augmentation.
What is "bottom surgery"?
Bottom surgery, like top surgery, depends on what sex characteristics the person is born with and what they are looking to change. People born with vaginas may opt for phalloplasty, where a phallus is created using skin tissue from an arm or thigh. They may also opt for mediatoidplasty, where the clitoris is released from the pubis to give more length. People born with penises may choose to get vaginoplasty, which consists of creating vaginal tissue using existing penile tissue.
